He was a founder of the Boy Scouts of America. He was also the author and illustrator of many books, including The American Boys Handy Book.

Daniel Henry Holmes
He was a New Orleans department store tycoon whose summer estate now serves as the Covington Holmes High School campus.

Dr. Alvin Poweleit
As an opthamologist/otolaryngologist. Dr. Poweleit never turned a patient away, no matter how busy his schedule. He was a survivor of the Bataan Death March. He was also an author.

Dr. James E. Randolph
He served as a family physician to the African-American community for over half a century. His office was located at Robbins and Greenup Strees, later at 10th and Greenup Streets.

Little Turtle
Little Turtle was the Miami Chief who fought the United States troops in an attempt to retain the tribal land in this area for his people.

Frank Duveneck
He was an internationally recognized artist who studied in Munich. Later, he popularized the bravura style in painting while teaching at the Cincinnati Arts Academy.

George Steinford
With his wife Rose, he collected and repaired toys anonymously, giving them away at Christmas for more than five decades. The Steinford's foundation continues this work.

Thomas P. Thacker
Thacker, the Cincinnati Basketball Hall of Fame inductee, played on three championship teams: the University of Cincinnati, the Boston Celtics, and the Indiana Pacers.

Jane Roberta Whatley Summers
She was the first African-American and the first woman to manage the Jacob Price Homes public housing complex. She devoted her life to fighting the battles of injustice, poverty, and disharmony.

Dorothy Wood
Wood, along with her husband, County Clerk Al Wood, and with Bill and Margaret Reder, founded the Redwood School and Rehabilitation Center for children with special needs.

John Roebling
He engineered Covington's Suspension Bridge, which was completed in 1867. Mr. Robeling's firm later designed the Brooklyn Bridge.

Haven Gillespie
Gillespie wrote the lyrics to hundreds of popular songs, including "Santa Claus is Coming to Town", "Right or Wrong", and "You Go to My Head".

Josephine Humphrey
She was an activist in Covington's African-American community and was instrumental in founding the Eastside Neighborhood Development Corporation, which enabled many families to buy their first homes.

Johann Schmitt
Schmitt's religious paintings are prominent in many older Roman Catholic churches in the region. His most famous pupil was Frank Duveneck.

Bishop Camillus P. Maes
Bishop Maes' vision resulted in the Cathedral Basilica of the Assumption, which was modeled after the Cathedral of Notre Dame in Paris, France.

James "Pigmeat" Jarrett
Pigmeat's legendary blues style on the piano was a drawing card for nightclubs for the larger part of the 20th century.

William P. Devou
With his brother, Devou donated the family estate to the City of Covington, now known as Devou Park. Devou also set up two park related trusts.

Margaretta Baker Hunt
Mrs. Hunt established the foundation which provides instuction in the fine arts, including free art classes for children.

The Local Heroes Mural is on permanent display at the Mary Ann Mongan Branch of the Kenton County Public Library. The mural measures 40' by 10' and was done in acrylics on canvas. It was painted in the spring of 1995 by a group of local artists.

You can click on any of the indiviuals featured in the mural to discover who they are and what contributions they made to the Northern Kentucky and Greater Cincinnati Community.
