Hour of Code

Press release: November 29. 2018 Google sponsors Hour of Code at the Kenton County Public Library The Library is full of stories. Now you can bring those stories to life by participating in the Hour of Code activities this December. On Wednesday, December 5, all branches of the Kenton County Public Library will showcase tech tools and classes offered to encourage visitors of all ages to learn more about this growing specialty. Google has given grants to 250 libraries across America to offer Hour of Code activities in which Kenton County was a recipient. This grant will allow staff to create mini-computer labs in lobbies of all library locations on December 5. Guests can visit the Covington, Erlanger or William E. Durr Branch in Independence anytime between 2 pm to 6 pm to work through a fun and engaging activity where they will animate a story by using simple coding methods. Upon completion, participants will be entered into a raffle at a chance to win ozobots, microbits, bags and more. The event is free and open to all ages but will focus on the elementary and preschool age groups. Ann Schoenenberger, Digital Librarian, explains the importance of introducing coding to children. “Coding is an entry point to engaging children into computer science. It’s the process used to identify problems and formulate solutions. By breaking down a big project into small parts, it makes the process not so overwhelming which is important in all facets of the learning process.” In addition to highlighting the connection between computer science and literacy, Library staff will also have a display of coding books and highlight upcoming coding and robotics programs. There will also be information about programs in the [...]
