Chapter 1: Reds Opening Day

How KCPL brought creativity to one of Cincinnati’s oldest traditions

There are few traditions in Greater Cincinnati that carry the energy and history of Opening Day for the Cincinnati Reds.

It’s more than a game. It’s a citywide ritual. A sign that winter is over. A day when generations line the streets, wear red and celebrate something bigger than baseball.

At the center of it all is the Findlay Market Opening Day Parade, a tradition more than a century old that brings the community together in one long march toward the ballpark.

This year, the Kenton County Public Library had a story of its own to tell.

Made in the library

The red shirts.
The bold banner.
The clean, professional look.

Every piece was created in house at the Erlanger Branch’s STREAM Center.

That’s the story.

The STREAM Center, short for Science, Technology, Reading, Engineering, Art and Math, is a hands-on makerspace where ideas turn into something real. From large format printing to vinyl cutting and more, it gives the community tools to create. And for the Findlay Market Opening Day Parade, KCPL did exactly that.

From concept to creation, the team produced parade-ready materials that looked professionally made because they were, just inside a public library.

What once required outside vendors can now happen locally and affordably. The same space that produced KCPL’s banner can help a teacher, a student, a small business or a community group bring an idea to life.
