My name is Liam Pryor, and for the past 8 months, I’ve had the pleasure of working at the Kenton County Public Library as a Public Relations Intern. I’ve had little involvement with Public Libraries during my adult life. However, as my career aspirations have developed, I’ve become increasingly interested in working for governments and non-profit organizations. My time at KCPL has confirmed this belief and better demonstrated to me all that libraries have to offer.
I now see that libraries don’t just check out books, but act as a comprehensive support system for their community. Here are the three services that I found to be most impactful.
Patrons can check out tools from a collection of 120 items. It includes everything from rotary tools to lawn care equipment. Tools of this quality is often far too expensive to justify buying for a single project and are out of the question for most people. The program removes barriers to access and encourages patrons to complete their home projects.
One of my favorite things the library offers is a catalog of career and job services programs. Patrons have access to job search tools, advice from career coaches, networking event and more. Career coaching has had a big impact on my life, and provided me with knowledge I didn’t know I was lacking. I love that patrons have a team they can depend on when dealing with something as important as their livelihood.
The library provides multiple programs unique to the elderly. This includes fitness classes, social hours and a variety of educational courses dealing with aging. Programs like these are essential for building community and empowering patrons later in life. It makes me happy to see that all demographics are accounted for and have a space where they feel welcomed.
The library offers more programs and resources than I could possibly mention. The best way to learn more about what the Kenton County Public Library offers is to get involved. Get started by checking out some of the upcoming events here.
My internship at KCPL has been an incredibly rewarding experience that has expanded my understanding of what a public library can be. I’m grateful to have worked alongside such dedicated staff and to have seen firsthand the positive impact these services have on the community. While my time here has come to an end, I’ll carry forward the lessons I’ve learned and the appreciation I’ve gained for libraries as vital, innovative community hubs. I encourage everyone to take advantage of the resources available.
