Library Card Sign-up Month dates back to 1987 when then U.S. Secretary of Education, William Bennett, stated, "Let's have a campaign... Every child should obtain a library card and use it." The American Library Association, opens a new window took those words seriously and decided to team up with the National Commission on Libraries and Information Science to start the campaign.
The very first theme for Library Card Sign-up Month was "The Best Gift You'll Ever Give Your Child... A Library Card." While the campaign has changed and evolved over the years, the primary goal has always remained the same: to get more library cards in the hands of our community members.
This year's theme of "A Library Card Hits All the Right Notes" reminds us that, no matter what rhythm you find yourself in, there's a seat for you in the front row at the library.
