September is Library Card Sign-up Month

      by Maggie FulmerAugust 26, 2026

Library Card Sign-up Month dates back to 1987 when then U.S. Secretary of Education, William Bennett, stated, "Let's have a campaign... Every child should obtain a library card and use it." The American Library Association, opens a new window took those words seriously and decided to team up with the National Commission on Libraries and Information Science to start the campaign.

The very first theme for Library Card Sign-up Month was "The Best Gift You'll Ever Give Your Child... A Library Card." While the campaign has changed and evolved over the years, the primary goal has always remained the same: to get more library cards in the hands of our community members.

This year's theme of "A Library Card Hits All the Right Notes" reminds us that, no matter what rhythm you find yourself in, there's a seat for you in the front row at the library.

Laufey Book Club Library Card Collaboration

We're excited to announce a limited-run of special edition KCPL x Laufey Book Club library cards, available at all branches beginning September 1 while supplies last. Laufey, opens a new window is a popular Icelandic-Chinese singer-songwriter, cellist and two-time Grammy winner with more than 20 million monthly listeners on Spotify. She is also the honorary chair, opens a new window of Library Card Sign-up Month this year.

Laufey founded the Laufey Book Club in 2022 to share her love of reading with her fans. She is also the author of the children's picture book, "Mei Mei the Bunny", which released in April this year. Less than 40 libraries across the globe are participating in this library card collaboration, and we're one of only two in Kentucky! If interested, existing cardholders are able to switch to the special edition Laufey card. It cannot be given out just as a collectible and must be fully registered as a library card.
