In 1870, Ludlow was home to an ethnically diverse population. The total population was 817. Of these 817, 577 (70%) were born in the United States and 239 (30%) were born in foreign countries. The foreign born population consisted of the following: German (35%), Irish (30%), English (25%), and other (10%).

For many years, Ludlow was the second largest city in Kenton County. Ludlow held this position in the 1950, however, by the 1960 Census, Erlanger’s population had surpassed that of Ludlow.
