Do you know someone who is making a difference through literacy in Northern Kentucky? Kenton County Public Library wants to hear about them!
Nominations are now being accepted for the 2026 Mary Ann Mongan Literacy Award, recognizing individuals and organizations that have made outstanding contributions to literacy in our community.
From teachers who inspire young readers to volunteers who help adults develop essential reading skills, the award celebrates those who are making a lasting difference through education and literacy.
Honoring a Legacy of Literacy
Started in 2009 by the Kenton County Public Library Foundation, the award honors Mary Ann Mongan, the first executive director of the Kenton County Public Library.
Mongan began her library career in 1958 as manager of the Covington Library. When the library district was formed in 1967, she became KCPL's first director. She retired after 41 years of service, leaving a lasting legacy of dedication to literacy and libraries in Northern Kentucky.
Celebrating 2025's Recipient
The 2025 award was presented to Margie Maschmeyer, a longtime literacy volunteer whose dedication has helped generations of Northern Kentucky residents discover the joy of reading.
Now 95, Maschmeyer spent more than a decade volunteering as a teacher's aide at St. James–St. Boniface School in Ludlow. She also tutored adult learners through the library's Adult Literacy program and volunteered with the Reading Buddy program at the Erlanger Branch.

Her creative approach to teaching, including singing stories to spark children's curiosity, helped readers of all ages build skills, confidence and a lifelong appreciation for books. Read more about Margie Maschmeyer and view the complete list of past Mary Ann Mongan Literacy Award winners.
