Let's celebrate Nonfiction November! What does that entail? Nonfiction November is a month-long challenge to read nonfiction books – that is, books that are based on real life, from memoirs to history to cookbooks and beyond! It's not about reading "serious" books (a common misconception), but about exploring genres and trying something new.
Why should you read nonfiction this month (and in the months to come)? Well, you can:
- Learn something new and explore a new-to-you topic.
- Travel through time and to new places.
- Revisit a subject you enjoy. Sports, music, historic events or figures, etc.
- Gain new perspectives and see the world through someone else's eyes.
Most importantly, you can read nonfiction simply to have fun! If the first book you try just isn't working for you, don't give up on the genre altogether. Try something new and check out another. Free of charge! 😉
Wondering where to start when looking for your next nonfiction read? Try:
- Book displays at the branches. At the Perennial Reads table, for example, you can find popular titles that are regularly getting checked out. You'll also likely find seasonal table displays for November holidays or observances like military history books for Veterans Day, books by indigenous authors for Native American Heritage Month or even cookbooks for Thanksgiving!
- A quick read. Start with something short but impactful like poetry or nonfiction graphic novels.
- Books lists on our website, opens a new window. The library regularly shares curated lists of new books (including new nonfiction titles!) or books based on different themes.
- Staff recommendations. You can always ask a staff member at the library for a recommendation. While we haven't read every book in the library, we can still help you find the ones that are right for you.
You can also start by checking out some of the new nonfiction releases hitting shelves this month. You'll want to place your holds on these titles now. Happy reading!
