Summer is just around the corner. Many families will spend their days playing outside, swimming at the pool, and going on vacations. But amid all the fun, one thing tends to creep in: the dreaded summer slide. The summer slide is the loss of knowledge and skills that tends to happen while kids are out of school.
Your local library is here to help, though. Here are some ideas to prevent the summer slide without cutting into summer fun.
- If your child is learning to read or needs practice, check out our Decodable and Phonics books. And read through our Let's Start Reading blogs for many ideas, activities, and books to help build literacy skills.
- If your child is reading at a lower reading level, check out our Hi/Lo books for tweens and teens. (Hi/Lo means high interest with low vocabulary)
- For children with dyslexia or other learning difficulties, look for our books for readers with dyslexia and check out this list for ADHD representation.
- Let’s not forget science and math. These books provide activities and information to keep the learning going.
- Look for more book recommendations on our Childrens Readers Advisory page.
- Check out our databases, specifically Teachables. Here you can find many worksheets and activities to practice skills at home.
- And of course, read! All ages can participate in our Summer Reading Celebration and win prizes throughout June and July. Find out more at https://www.kentonlibrary.org/src/
