Every year on May 22, mystery fans celebrate Sherlock Holmes Day, honoring the world’s most famous detective and the enduring popularity of detective fiction. More than a century after Sherlock Holmes first appeared in print, readers still can’t get enough of clever clues, suspicious characters and stories that keep us guessing until the very last page.
As readers celebrate Sherlock Holmes Day, KCPL is preparing for its own summer full of mysteries with Summer Reading Detectives, opens a new window.
There’s something timeless about a good mystery.
A missing clue. A suspicious character. A locked room. A trail that doesn’t quite add up until the very end. Whether it’s Sherlock Holmes studying footprints through the fog of London, Nancy Drew uncovering secrets in an old mansion or modern audiences binge-watching true crime documentaries late into the night, detective stories have a way of pulling us in unlike any other genre.
Maybe it’s because those mysteries invite us to participate. They challenge us to notice details, ask questions and connect the dots before the case is cracked.
This summer, readers of all ages are invited to crack the case on how to have their best summer yet at Kenton County Public Library. Every book holds a clue and every chapter read gets participants one step closer to solving the mystery. Along the way, readers off all ages can earn prizes, attend free events and discover stories that surprise, entertain and inspire.
The truth is, detective fiction has never really gone out of style.
Sherlock Holmes first appeared in print in 1887, and more than a century later, he still shows up everywhere from television and movies to memes and escape rooms. Agatha Christie’s Hercule Poirot and Miss Marple remain beloved worldwide. Kids still race through Encyclopedia Brown and The Hardy Boys. Even superhero stories, police procedurals and modern thrillers borrow heavily from detective storytelling.
At their core, these stories are about discovery. They reward observation, imagination and persistence. Those are the same qualities that make reading so powerful in the first place.
That’s why Summer Reading Detectives isn’t just about logging the days you've read. It’s about adventure. It’s about chasing clues through stories, exploring new ideas and finding joy in unexpected places all summer long.
