Some of my favorite childhood memories began with my family packing our small car for a summer road trip.
A few suitcases. A cooler full of snacks. A stack of cassette tapes. Then we would hit the road in search of adventure.
Some years, those trips took us to far off places like Florida. But more often than not, our summer adventures were found much closer to home throughout Kentucky and the Midwest. We explored Mammoth Cave, visited the Kentucky Horse Park, hiked at Red River Gorge and Natural Bridge and stepped back in time at places like Fort Harrod and Shaker Village at Pleasant Hill.
Looking back, I realize those trips were never really about how far we traveled. They were about making memories together. My mom always made sure we had summer memories to carry with us long after the trip ended.
This summer, higher travel prices might mean that families are looking a little closer to home when planning vacations and weekend getaways. Fortunately, the Bluegrass State and surrounding region are filled with memorable destinations that can be explored within just a few hours of Northern Kentucky.
From hiking trails and caves to lake towns, museums, amusement parks and quirky roadside attractions, there are countless opportunities for families to create meaningful summer memories without needing to board a plane or spend days on the road.
Kentucky in particular offers an incredible variety of destinations for families looking to explore. One weekend might include hiking among the cliffs at Red River Gorge. Another could involve exploring the underground wonders of Mammoth Cave National Park. Families can visit horse farms, tour historic towns or simply enjoy a scenic drive through rolling countryside and small-town main streets.
Sometimes the best adventures are the ones hiding closest to home.
