The Pickle Autopsy: A Dill-iciously Disgusting Investigation

What happened to Pickles?

On Wednesday, that's the question young detectives set out to answer during Summer Reading Detectives' most unusual investigations at Kenton County Public Library's Covington Branch.

Armed with gloves, forensic tools and plenty of curiosity, kids stepped into the role of crime scene investigators to examine a very peculiar case. Their victim? A pickle. Their mission? Determine the cause of death.

Using observation, evidence collection and a little scientific reasoning, detectives carefully examined their suspect, recorded clues and tested evidence to piece together what happened. Along the way, they learned how real forensic scientists use observation, critical thinking and scientific methods to solve mysteries.

The investigation may have been centered around a pickle, but the skills were very real. Participants practiced problem-solving, attention to detail and teamwork while learning how science can help uncover the truth.

Of course, no forensic investigation would be complete without a few surprises. From strange discoveries to unexpected clues, every detective had the chance to make observations, form theories and test their ideas before reaching a final conclusion.

Whether they cracked the case or simply enjoyed getting their hands dirty in the name of science, one thing was certain: this was one mystery they won't soon forget.

Summer Reading Detectives continues all summer long with programs, activities and adventures designed to inspire curiosity, creativity and discovery. Keep following the clues. You never know where the next mystery might lead.
