Audiobooks have been around a lot longer than you may think.
When Thomas Edison invented the phonograph in 1877, he created a device that could transcribe telegraphic messages through indentations on paper tape. As the first device capable of recording sound and playing it back, he also advocated for its ability to develop phonographic books that would assist the blind and visually impaired. This set the foundation for what audiobooks would eventually become today.
