KCPL Executive Director Dave Schroeder Announces Retirement

After nearly four decades of service to the Kenton County Public Library, Executive Director Dave Schroeder has announced his retirement, effective August 1, 2026.

Schroeder’s career with KCPL spans 36 years, including two tenures from 1986–1996 and 2000–2026, with the last 19 years serving as Executive Director. His journey began as a high school senior working at the Covington Branch—an experience that launched a career defined by steady leadership, community connection and a deep belief in the power of public libraries.

“It has been a true honor and privilege to serve this community alongside such an incredible team,” said Schroeder. “When I first walked into the Covington Branch as a teenager, I never imagined where this path would lead. I’m grateful for every moment and every person who has been part of that journey.”

Under Schroeder’s leadership, Kenton County Public Library has experienced sustained growth and innovation, strengthening its role as a vital community resource across Northern Kentucky. Today, the library system is financially strong, operationally sound, and supported by a dedicated staff and leadership team.

“Dave has positioned KCPL for continued success,” said Iliana Rosales-Figueroa, President of the Kenton County Public Library Board of Trustees. “His leadership has ensured the organization is not only stable, but thriving. We are grateful for his decades of service and the lasting impact he has made on our community."

Schroeder noted that his decision to retire comes at a natural transition point for the organization, following the successful opening and establishment of the new Latonia Branch and with all five library locations performing strongly.

“It’s a good time to turn leadership over to the next generation,” Schroeder said.

The Kenton County Public Library Board of Trustees will launch a national search for the next Executive Director in the coming weeks. Schroeder will continue in his role through August 1 to support a smooth transition.
